Death of a Fort Hood Soldier

Spc. Austin James Sampson

FORT HOOD, Texas - Fort Hood officials have released the name of a Soldier who died Jan. 4 at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas from injuries  suffered from a gunshot wound Jan. 3 in Killeen, Texas.

Specialist Austin James Sampson, 25, whose home of record is listed as Bliss, N.Y., entered active duty service in July 2006 as a cavalry scout.  He arrived at Fort Hood in November 2006 and was currently assigned to Headquarters Troop, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, since February 2010.

Sampson deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from November 2007 to January 2009. He also deployed in support of Operation New Dawn from August 2010 to August 2011.

Sampson's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, two Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon.

Circumstances surrounding this incident are currently under investigation by the Killeen Police Department.
