  • 21 EFMB Candidates Enter into the Last Day of Combat Lanes

1st CAV DIV SOLDIER CONDUCTS FINAL AID BAG PREPARATION PRIOR TO COMBAT LANE TESTING

As the latest round of Expert Field Medical Badge (EFMB) candidates enters into the final day of combat lane testing only 21 remain out of the 173 that began. Of the 21 candidates remaining 13 are from 1st Calvary Division, 7 from 1st Medical Brigade, and 1 from CRAMC. The remaining Soldiers will complete their final combat testing lane followed by the written examination retest.    This evening the remaining candidates will begin preparation for their final event, the 12 mile foot march.

Interesting in knowing more on the EFMB, read on…

The EFMB, established in June 1965, is a Department of the Army special skills award to recognize field medical personnel for exceptional competence and outstanding performance.

To earn the coveted badge Soldiers are tested on Tactical Combat Casualty Care; Medical and Casualty Evacuation; Communications; Warrior Skills; Day and Night Land Navigation, Army Regulations, Field Manuals, and Mental and Physical Toughness.
EFMB testing has evolved over time to more closely mirror the skills Soldiers are required to use on today's battlefields.  The candidates must utilize current methods of casualty care such as, applying a Combat Application Tourniquet, homeostatic clotted agent and emergency trauma dressing to treat simulated casualties.  They must also evacuate their patients to a Stryker Medical Evacuation Vehicle and helicopter under simulated indirect fire and Improvised Explosive Devices, over, through and around obstacles.

The first week, candidates work with the instructors running through scenarios in the combat testing lanes and are briefed on the warrior tasks they are expected to complete. In the second week candidates take the written test, complete day and night land navigation, and their skills are tested in the combat lanes. The event culminates with the 12-mile foot march.

For those wondering how the EFMB came to be, read on...

Establishment of an Expert Field Medical Badge as a Department of the Army special skill award for recognition of exceptional competence and outstanding performance by field medical personnel was recommended in a letter dated 20 January 1964 from MG Duncan, Chief of Staff, US Continental Army Command to Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel (DCSPER), in accordance with correspondence between General Waters and General Heaton, the Surgeon General. On 14 May 1964, tentative approval of the recommendation was received from the DCSPER subject to submission of criteria, to be developed by Headquarters US Continental Army Command and Assistant Chief of Staff for Force Development, DA. Design of the badge, with criteria for award, was forwarded in a summary sheet to DCSPER in February 1965. The summary sheet was returned without action later that month, having been deferred pending further study of questions posed by the Vice Chief of Staff, US Army. Finally, in June of 1965, The Institute of Heraldry was advised the summary sheet establishing an EFMB was approved. The Institute of Heraldry was charged with preparing a necessary Army Regulation and commencing action on procurement of the new badge. A reproduction sample of the EFMB was approved in December of 1965. The badge was oxidized silver consisting of a stretcher, placed horizontally, behind caduceus with a cross of the Geneva Convention and the junction of the wings. There have been no changes to the badge since its inception.

We look forward to seeing families, friends, and fellow Soldiers during at the Graduation Ceremony 20 May 2014 and wish the best of luck to all candidates. Pictures and candidate status will be updated in this event list periodically throughout the testing.
