Death of a Fort Hood Soldier

FORT HOOD, Texas - Fort Hood officials have released the name of a Soldier who died of apparent natural causes in his on-post residence Nov. 15.

Staff Sgt. Brian Michael Wilkerson, 37, whose home of record is listed as Albuquerque, New Mexico, entered active-duty military service in September 1997 as a wheeled vehicle mechanic and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 62nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, Fort Hood, since April 2011.

Wilkerson deployed to Bosnia in support of Operation Joint Endeavor from April 2000 to October 2000, to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from March 2003 to March 2004 and to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from February 2005 to February 2006.

Wilkerson’s awards and decorations include four Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, five Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal with bronze service star, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, three Overseas Service Ribbons, North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal, Combat Action Badge, Driver and Mechanic badge and the Basic Marksman Qualification Badge.

Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.
