Fort Hood hosts fire prevention week.

FORT HOOD, Texas -- Fort Hood's Directorate of Emergency Services will host a fire prevention hands-on event as part of Fire Prevention Week at 10 a.m. Oct. 8 at Oveta Culp Hobby Elementary School here.

More than 320 elementary students will be able to interact with Fort Hood fire fighters and learn about fire safety and prevention.

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on Oct. 8, 1871, but continued into and did most of its damage on Oct. 9, 1871.

Media who are interested in covering this event should register here. On Oct. 8, media should meet Fort Hood public affairs at 9:30 a.m. at the south side visitors parking lot.
